“We are not begging for freedom, we are fighting for freedom”
~ Witold Urbanowicz

During the Second World War and especially during the victorious Battle of Britain Polish airmen played a critical role defeating the Germans. Today, as we reflect on this remarkable contribution and victory, surrounded by the last remaining veterans, we believe that it is our duty to keep their glorious story alive. Inspired by extraordinary courage and strength of the brave men and women, the idea to build the “Spiral of Victory” monument was developed. When built, this will be the first memorial in Canada dedicated to Polish airmen, ground personnel and Women’s Auxiliary Air Force serving in the Polish Air Force alongside RAF during the Second World War.

The City of Mississauga is the cultural heart of Polish diaspora and home to the largest Polish-Canadian community in Canada. As a part of a multicultural city, we proudly share our heritage and believe that we are committed to work together to preserve the memory of Polish history and heroes. We truly believe that together we can build this remarkable monument, that’s why we would greatly appreciate any contribution towards the “Spiral of Victory” monument. Our aim is to have the monument placed and dedicated before the end of 2021.
The monument will be located outside the John Paul II Cultural Centre in Mississauga. The place chosen for this monument is a great location, apart from being the centre of Polish cultural activities in Ontario, it has many other advantages such as great visibility and open space for the sculpture which points to the sky in the spirit of flying.

The monument will be clearly visible from every side, because of its three-dimensional nature. The centre of the monument is 11 feet south southwest from the flag post and around 10.75 feet north east from the sidewalk.

We are considering several ideas for how to honour sponsors. This can be treated as a second phase of this project.
The “Spiral of Victory” monument is composed of two main parts: The Obelisk, which is a slender pyramid on a triangular base, with inscriptions and symbols on all three sides, and the dynamic, upper composition which includes sculptures of three aircrafts symbolizing “battle in the air”.

We placed the symbol of Polish Aviation - a red and white checker board on each side of the monument. This element will be lit from inside and will shine after dark.

The front face of the monument, above the main inscription accommodates the RAF logo.

On the west face of the Obelisk we placed the Polish military aviator’s badge (an eagle with a laurel wreath in its beak) with an inscription below it.

The whole sculpture stands on a compass rose base which is a mosaic embedded in concrete.

We chose materials related to aviation: metal and concrete.

The structure was carefully designed and calculated by a structural engineer. The upper composition, using the flight as inspiration, meets the aerodynamic requirements to create as little wind resistance as possible.

Stainless steel of the highest quality guarantees the longevity and durability of the sculpture. The reinforced concrete base, with an appropriate anchoring system (calculated by our engineer), will be constructed according to the highest standards.
